Justification for Study
- Why is this study important?
- What is the reason behind this study being conducted?
- Any past research?
This section should be as short and explicit as possible. A layman should be able to pick it up and understand why this study is being conducted. This section is very important because it stands as the foundation of the entire study. If you can’t justify, with facts, the need for the study then maybe you shouldn’t be conducting the study.
Objective of Study
- Feeds off the background for the study. It should ideally be a list that summarizes the conclusion of the justification for the study
- It should be super high level. If you have more than five objectives, then you may be doing too much. It helps define the scope of the project
Research Questions
- These are the exact questions you want to answer. Think of it like this: If after the research, I can’t answer these core questions, then there’s a problem. Your entire research is built on these questions. It should also not have more than 5 questions, ideally 3 really.
- Your research questions help you identify what research methodology to use.
- They should be very direct questions and somewhat high level too.
What we want to learn more about
- This section is for you really. It acts as a dump for your thoughts and all the many questions you may have. It can also be instrumental in piecing together the research questions and consolidating your ideas in general.
- I’ll advise you to write this section before you write the research questions. Sit and brainstorm with your PM if you have one. Identify any questions you guys currently have about the problem space and anything you would love to learn at the end of the study
